Apple bombed the mobile market with its launch of the Apple iPhone 12 series, which in fact, comes without a charger. While you may be planning to purchase the out-of-box charger at an extra price, there have been a lot of speculations going around if one can charge the new iPhone 12 using the old charger. We received a lot of queries from our clients and customers related to the same. Where some people claim that the old wireless charger is compatible with the MagSafe charge function, others simply have no clue.
In this article, we’ll try to bring forward what the truth is. If you can actually get done with the old charger or not, you’ll get to know in the article below.
What comes in the box?
The Apple iPhone 12 series has the same old lightning-to-USB-C cable in the box, but without the adapter. So if you don’t have the old charger with you, you would need to shell out some bucks on purchasing a new one. Moreover, there are no earphones or cases, so you’ll need to purchase them at an extra cost too. While Apple is selling their own AirPods and MagSafe compatible chargers, there are some aftermarket options that won’t break the bank, not to mention the range of cases and Apple iPhone 12 series chargers and Mini PD Chargers that ESR has rolled out.
Can you charge the iPhone 12 with the old charger?
One short answer- Depends! While the new MagSafe Charger is compatible with the new series only, it can also work with the older generation iPhones that have the wireless charging feature.

However, since the older iPhone models do not have the magnetic back feature, one may not be able to snap your iPhone into an ideal charging position, which you would manually need to locate. Only the iPhone 12 series support it. Other models like the iPhone 11 series, the iPhone SE 2nd Gen, iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, X, 8, and the 8 Plus can simply be placed on the MagSafe connector, however, they won’t lock into place. AirPods models like the AirPods Pro, AirPods with Wireless Charging Case 2nd gen, Wireless Charging Case for AirPods are also compatible.
If you are planning to use the lightning-to-USB-C cable to charge the device, you can still use the old USB adapter to connect it to the charging cable and power up your device. If you have the older Wireless Charger, that too will work without any trouble with the iPhone 12 series.

The Final Word

While you may be considering options in the market, two of them shared here are certainly the best. Also, make sure to keep your personal preferences in mind.
My charger for my iPad (2017) doesn’t work on my 12. Apple really dropped the ball on this one!! No headphones and no charging cube!! I paid full price, $849.99, and to not get those items is an absolute slap in the face for dedicated Apple user!! Anyone know their reasons behind it??
Apple’s Intent
Apple’s intent is to control you. But first, they must slap you in the face to get your attention. The best way to do this is to sell you a phone that cannot be recharged. You will get a few days use out of it, and then you must throw it away and buy a new one. I need to have my phone on a car charger during long road trips, where it serves as my car radio. I can’t see how the supplied charging cable connects the phone to anything at all.
And don’t ask me why ESR is capitalizing every word. That certainly is not my intent..
I just went out and bought a new car that had a wireless charging dock in it as an option. Problem solved!
